“American Mariachi” by José Cruz González is a captivating play that explores themes of tradition, family, and the power of music. Set in the 1970s, the story follows Lucha, a young woman with a passion for mariachi music, as she defies societal expectations and challenges gender norms to pursue her dream of forming an all-female mariachi band. Against the backdrop of cultural and familial expectations, the play celebrates the transformative and unifying nature of music while shedding light on the resilience of individuals striving for self-expression and identity. Gonzalez weaves a heartfelt narrative that combines humor, drama, and the rich sounds of mariachi, creating a vibrant and poignant exploration of Mexican-American culture and the pursuit of one’s dreams.
