“Pure Confidence” is a play written by Carlyle Brown that explores themes of race, identity, and ambition in the context of 19th-century America. The story follows Simon Cato, a skilled African American jockey, and his journey within the world of horse racing, which was a prominent and highly competitive sport during that era.

Simon Cato, based on the historical figure Isaac Murphy, rises to prominence as a talented jockey despite the racial prejudices of the time. His success, however, comes with its own challenges, as he navigates a world where racial tensions are pervasive, even within the seemingly genteel and sophisticated sport of horse racing.

The play examines the complexities of identity, the pursuit of success, and the compromises individuals make in the face of societal expectations. “Pure Confidence” sheds light on the struggles faced by African Americans striving for success in a racially divided society while also delving into the personal cost of such aspirations. Through Simon Cato’s story, Carlyle Brown provides a thought-provoking commentary on the intersections of race, class, and ambition in American history.
