“Well” is a play written by Lisa Kron that premiered in 2004. The play is a unique blend of autobiography and theatrical exploration, where Lisa Kron herself is both the playwright and a central character. The narrative primarily revolves around Lisa’s experiences growing up in Lansing, Michigan, particularly focusing on her relationship with her mother, Ann.
The play starts with Lisa’s attempt to create a traditional solo performance, aiming to explore her mother’s struggle with illness and her own experiences with chronic fatigue syndrome. However, as the play unfolds, it takes unexpected turns, breaking the conventional boundaries of theater. Characters challenge Lisa’s narrative, and her mother actively participates in the storytelling process, providing her own perspectives and opinions.
“Well” delves into themes of health, illness, identity, and the complexities of mother-daughter relationships. The unconventional structure, with its self-aware and self-reflective elements, adds layers of depth to the exploration of personal and family dynamics. Lisa Kron’s play is celebrated for its humor, authenticity, and its inventive approach to examining the intersections of individual and family histories.
