“The Imaginary Invalid” is a classic comedy play written by the French playwright Molière. First performed in 1673, the play revolves around the character Argan, a hypochondriac who believes himself to be perpetually ill. Argan’s obsession with his health leads him to consult various quack doctors and indulge in bizarre medical treatments. However, his real concern is marrying his daughter off to a doctor to secure free medical care. The plot unfolds with humorous misunderstandings, clever deceptions, and satirical commentary on the medical profession of the time. Molière uses wit and farce to critique the societal norms and medical practices of 17th-century France, making “The Imaginary Invalid” a timeless and entertaining theatrical work.
